Food for Thought

This blogging is kinda fun! I am even doing it in my online English class.
Here is a blog post I did for it.
I thought I would share it with you!

I was born in Russia.
I lived there for the first five years of my life.
In poverty.
Food was scarce, and what we had was greatly appreciated.
Most of what I remember came from the earth.
Pulling turnips; gathering eggs; drinking warm cow milk.

Just as I was leaving my birth country
with my new adoptive family,
in the home of our hosts in Moscow
I began to learn that food is something that can be not only appreciated
but something that is a part of tradition
and celebration.

I felt proud presenting my new American grandmother
with a traditional Russian cake
on her birthday
hand crafted by our Russian host family.

Beyond the special cake
We celebrated the birthday at a dacha
(a country farm)
with a large group of Russian people.
I experienced chocolate for the first time.
I was so excited at the delicious taste of this delectable, rich sweet candy.

Once I arrived at my new home in America
I realized my opportunity to experience so many wholesome new foods.
I appreciated everything and enjoyed eating them all.

Growing up I had realized the importance of eating every bite,
leaving nothing to go to waste.
Appreciating food was important to me.

My American mom cooked foods to help me remember my Russian heritage
and the Russian culture.
I valued eating and enjoyed everything I ate.

In Russia, it was customary to present departing guests
with a gift of remembrance.
I received a large, hand-crafted spoon from the people at the dacha.
It is special to me still today.

My value for healthy foods has stayed consistent.

When I might have the opportunity to lick cookie batter from the beater

I would probably decline.

Instead,
I would much more enjoy picking some chicken off of a stewed chicken bone.

Good wholesome food has stayed important to me.

But, there is something that I could never grasp.

I remember one day shortly after I had arrived in America,
I was at a store  and picked up piece of fruit.
I touched it. I looked at it, turning it in my hands.
I smelled it.  I tried to eat it.
It was odd.
I asked my mom, "What is it?  I don't understand?"
And she told me, "It's plastic fruit."

Even today,
I ask,
"What is the purpose?
Why not buy real food and put it in a basket
and that can be used for decoration, instead?"
The answer still eludes me.

Spring Hike with the Interns

Click to play this Smilebox slideshow: Spring Intern Hike

Check it out!! :) I am having a blast.
I am learning so much about teamwork, friendships and life.
There is only one life to live and I'm living mine right now.

In this Smilebox:
Mr. Hook (the really tall guy, with medium hair length),
Ms. Wallis (the tall female, with long-ish hair),
Mr. Carver (the guy formerly known as the guy with long black hair)
Ms. Stitt (a little taller than me with long reddish hair) and
Ms. Novak (me - the cutest little person there) hehe. :)
(and a couple various staff)

To clear any confusion:
I am not "little". I am 5 feet 3/4 inches tall. Well, I am little.

I have learned how to over come my shortness and accept it!

Have a great week everybody!

On a Scale of 1-10

An update.

I love it up here at OELS!
(Outdoor Education Lab School)

Even better, though
my lovely pups Jake and Fergi
are getting so much more comfortable
with me not being there all the time.

Jake has found a new distraction.
Looking at himself, his full-handsome self, in the new mirror.

(Doesn't that picture just make your heart melt?)

And
Miss Fergi has found herself chewing bones
and she loves her walks.

I am getting my confidence up too.

I have some little tokens of love, joy and encouragement up here.
(This is credited to Ami Kroon)

This is a drawing by Ami, which I received for my 18th birthday, back in November.

If my doggies can't be here, this lovely drawing reminds me of them.

I will share more tokens of joy with you later on.

Now I am laying in my bed, with all the girls fast asleep

(or at least that's what I'm hoping)

Goodnight (from behind my curtain!)

On a scale of 1-10

It's one million up here!!!

Much Love

Hello New Opportunities

(From the OELS website)

Well, I am living the Life.

I am currently an intern up in the Mountains
for my whole last semester of high school.

Pretty much
I work with a new group of awesome sixth graders per week.

I take online classes
and am actually an employee of the school district.

I teach classes
Including Geology, Pioneer History, Astronomy and Wildlife.

I also do Wellness-Checks on the students in my cabin.
Due to these recent H1N1 scare,
the school district requires us (interns)
to take temperatures of each student in "my" cabin each morning.

I have my own little corner in the room.
It consists of a bed and a bathroom.
OOH!
My bed has a curtain around it for privacy!

I mean,
Who doesn't love sleeping in a room full of 24 sixth grade girls without a curtain?

Oh yes
I do live up here for the semester.

Did I mention I get to go home on the weekends
(To visit the lovely Jake and Fergi)

Well
It is time for bed.
I have a staff meeting in the morning!

I will post more later, with an update.(Another picture from the OELS website)

About Me

Just a little about Me:

First of all, I am going to be a Senior in High School.

Second of all, I live with my Mom

and our two wonderful Wire Fox Terriers
in Colorado.

Thirdly, I am ready to start blogging my adventures in life.

Now that that's out of the way, I can begin. :)

I have played piano for 12 years (holy cow that's a really long time!) I am really into classical music, such as Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Debussy. You name it, I love it. I also played oboe for about 5 years, and eventually stopped due to lack of time in the day (with school work, piano and a social life).

Outside of music, I enjoy the outdoors, eating all types of different foods, and playing with my two dogs, Mr. Jake and Lovely Miss Fergi. :)

You can follow their summer adventures at
twospecialwires.blogspot.com

I'll write more soon!

Nina

A Work...

.. in progress! Come back soon. Hopefully, I'll have added more.
Right now homework, practicing and two little dogs are demanding my attention.
